A section of Tororo cement workers today laid off their tools for 6 hours demanding for their salary enhancement as the economy continues to bite.
The striking workers are mainly from the kiln section comprised of electricians, mechanics, lab technician, production amongst others.
The workers say the shs.11000 per day wage is no longer enough and does not rhyme with the type of work they do.
Waiswa Sinani a member of the workers Union at the factory says that they have been engaging the factory since May this year, but are yet to receive any positive feedbacks.
The Tororo cement executive director, Brig Gagarani gave the workers conditions of either continuing with work as negotiations continues, to find a common binding ground or they resign before he closes the firm due to the currently high operational costs.
He also noted that he is aware of the high commodity prices in the market and that they have the workers at heart; he asked them to table their grievances in a non-violent manner.
He also promised to continue engaging with the union heads.
However the workers are demanding to meet with the company owner to table their grievances since according to them nobody around the company wants to listen to them.
The workers also faulted the Tororo district labour office for failing to stand with them due to alleged mega hand-outs they claim were given to them at the factory.
