Protests have erupted in Jinja city today morning over rising commodity prices. It is the second time this month that people in Jinja are demonstrating over the escalating cost of living.
Taxi drivers in Jinja city held a sit-down strike while People were spotted setting tyres on fire and blocking roads with rocks.
Residents had to use boda boda motorcycles or walk to get to the Jinja City suburbs of Bugembe, Namulesa, Mpumudde, and Mafubira since the majority of the main routes were blocked by burning tyres.
The demonstration takes place at a time when a popular online document is instructing all members of the public to stay in their homes for 3 days, from the 25th to the 27th of July, 2022, as part of their alleged campaign against inflation in the country
Addressing journalists on Monday, Police spokesperson, Fred Enanga said security cannot allow such demonstrations that he said have another motive behind them.
Critics say the government is not doing enough to help the public cope with the tough economic times.
Whereas a number of countries have provided subsidies, in last week’s presidential address, President Museveni provided no short-term solutions to the skyrocketing fuel and food prices that the country is grappling with, saying that treading this line would be suicidal since it would make people feel comfortable when they are not.
