We have no power to fix school fees-Muyingo

The state minister for higher education John .C. Muyingo has told members of parliament on the education committee that they cannot fix school fees for schools.

The minister revealed this while appearing before the above committee chaired by John Twesigye to answer why the ministry has failed to address the issue of exorbitant school fees charged by both private and government aided schools.

Minister Muyingo told the MPs that if they decide to fix school fees they will also have to fix the menu for all schools noting that some schools charge high amounts just because their student have five meals a day and that in those five meals students are  fed with milk, matooke, rice, chicken, meat, and other expensive meals rather  than beans and  posho.

Minister Muyingo also revealed to the committee that they also have less powers to determine the amount of fees which should be paid by parents at government aided schools since those schools have got the board of governors which boards have got much powers on deciding on what should be done at those schools.

He however noted that his ministry has already started discussing the rules which deter schools from charging exorbitant school fees and that they have already sent their proposals on schools fees to the solicitor general so that he can advise them on what to do.

The chairperson of the committee John Twesigye challenged the minister to go back and get all the list of schools which provide student with five meals a day and bring them to the committee.

He also advised him to go and persuades those schools to go back to the traditional way of feeding  of beans and posho  so that they can reduce on the school fees which can be afforded by all parents.
