The District Local Council Five Chairpersons for Amuria and Kapelebyong have asked the Ministry of works and Uganda National Authority (UNRA) to fasten the process of tarmacking of Teso College – Amuria – Obalanga to Kotido road to avert the increasing cases of road accidents.
The leaders while speaking to media at Alomain swamp in Amuria District where a Fuso truck registration number UBA 670V got involved in an accident last night said the government must come to the rescue of the local people.
They note that the accident happened as result of government delays to tarmac the main road that has left the drivers of heavy trucks using small roads to connect to Amuria, Kapelebyong and other neighboring districts.
It must be noted that the Fuso truck was transporting traders to weekly markets in Adipala- Kapelebyong district and Orwamuge Market in Kotido district.
Francis Akorikin the LCV Kapelebyong said that the accident would have been avoided if the main road was tarmacked.
Moses Emabu the Amuria District LCV chairperson wondered why the government has taken time to work on the Teso College – Amuria – Obalanga – Kotido road.
He noted that as area leaders they are giving the shortest time to commence with the road works adding that if no action is taken by the government they will announce their next step of action.
But while addressing a gathering in Serere district over the weekend the State Minister for Works Musa Francis Ecweru Ecweru said that the government is committed to fulfilling its pledge of tarmacking several roads in Teso Sub region despite delays.
He said the roads to be tarmacked include; Kumi-Ngora-Serere-Kagwara whose works have failed to kick off for years due to the failure by the engineers to submit standardized BOQs, Soroti – Serere road, Katine – Ochero – Namasale road and Teso College – Amuria – Obalanga – Abim road.
